Prades-sur-Vernazobre & the Saint-Chinian wine region

This is the quiet, unspoilt wine country of the Hérault, in the Occitanie region: rolling vineyards, garrigue — the fragrant wild scrub of thyme and rosemary — and an unhurried southern rhythm.

The village

A small, quiet wine village

Prades-sur-Vernazobre is a rural village of just over three hundred inhabitants, with the little river Vernazobre running through it. The Domaine lies just outside the village centre — private and quiet, right among the vineyards.

The village is one of the twenty wine villages of the Saint-Chinian AOC. Several wine estates lie around the village, among them Domaine La Maurerie, Domaine des Jougla, Domaine Grasset and Domaine des Tourterelles.

Our highlights in the region

A few favourites to get you started. The full list of tips is waiting for you in the welcome folder; if you would like it in advance, just ask and we will send it over.

Beach & sea

The broad sandy beach of Valras-Plage on the Mediterranean, and swimming in the river Orb at Roquebrun, the "little Nice" with its Mediterranean garden.

Food & drink

La Table de la Grange in Saint-Chinian for authentic regional cooking, or L'Europe in Cessenon-sur-Orb for a long French lunch.

Markets & local produce

The weekly market in Saint-Chinian (Thursday and Sunday mornings) for fresh cheese, olives and seasonal produce. And in Saint-Chinian itself you can visit the local wine estates to taste and buy.

Culture & history

The Canal du Midi with the impressive lock staircase of Fonserannes near Béziers (UNESCO), Minerve — one of the most beautiful villages in France, perched on a rocky spur — and Carcassonne, the medieval walled city full of knights and castles.

Active & outdoors

The Voie Verte is ten minutes away by bike: 33 km of flat cycle path all the way to the Canal du Midi. Walking in the Parc Naturel Régional du Haut-Languedoc, and the striking Gorges d'Héric near the Caroux for walking and swimming. There is golf too: a 9-hole course at Lamalou-les-Bains (±40 min) and the 18-hole course at Carcassonne (±1 hour).

Families & children

Aqualand at Cap d'Agde (±1 hour), a large water park with slides and pools, and the Réserve Africaine de Sigean — a safari park near Narbonne and a real favourite with children.

Cycle to the village — leave the car where it is

From the Domaine you cycle for about ten minutes through the vineyards to the D20. You cross over and are straight onto the Voie Verte: a former railway line turned cycle path, running all the way to the Canal du Midi, 33 kilometres away. Because trains cannot manage steep gradients, the route is beautifully flat — and for most of the way you ride with no cars around you, which is a relief with children too.

Turn left and you are in Cessenon-sur-Orb in ten to twelve minutes; turn right and you reach Saint-Chinian in twenty. So you can have lunch or dinner in the village with a glass of Saint-Chinian, and simply cycle home afterwards. No car needed, no fuss.

For us, this cycle path was in fact the reason we bought this particular house.

Bringing your own bikes? There is a lockable store at the Domaine. More about the route: Hérault Tourisme.

Shopping for food

In Saint-Chinian, about ten minutes by car, you will find everything for your daily shopping: a large supermarket and a good bakery. At the weekly market — Thursday and Sunday mornings — there are butchers too, and stalls with local produce.
